Fort McKavett Outreach Event a Big Success!
The TETRA Outreach Ride at Fort McKavett was held March 5-7, 2010. This was the first of four Outreach Events planned for this year and was a great success. Despite the weather we were able to host over 50
children for a successful event. After some juggling of planned activities by TETRA President Gary Hahn, all the children were able to experience a wagon ride, shooting BB guns, playing period games and cooking their own steaks over a camp fi re grill.
Representatives of The Lone Star Dutch Oven Society, John Nicholos, Danny and Jennifer King and Roy Blevins were a big hit among the kids cooking cobbler and pineapple upside down cakeand homemade biscuits. A special thank you to Rodney Duderstadt, President of the Lone Star Dutch Oven Society who is helping us get people for all of our outreach events.
Wagon Drivers Juanita Brooks, Billy Sparks, Kelly Boesen, and Blanfard Perry were on hand to give rides and participate in harnessing activities with the all the children.
The staff and volunteers at Ft. McKavett went out of their way to help TETRA and assure that the kids, chaperones and volunteers had everything they needed for an excellent learning experience. They helped
with food preparation and facilitated the transport of children to and from the trail lunch site. The kids participated in the flag lowering ceremony on Saturday afternoon and heard a brief but patriotic talk from the Fort McKavett Historical Site Manager, Buddy Garza about the ift of freedom they have been given by those serving in the US military from the time of Ft. McKavett’s heyday until today.
A special thanks to Activities Director Debby Alley for organizing volunteers and activities and bringing TETRA members together to host another successful outreach event!
