TETRA Youth Outreach Ride/Event at Fort McKavett

March 5-7, 2010

Trail Riders welcome to come and enjoy the rides! If you plan to attend as a rider, YOU MUST REGISTER/RSVP NO LATER THAN February 26, 2010 in order for us to plan enough food.

The Fort McKavett Outreach event is a two night campout for 60 students to familiarize them with life on the Frontier trail. Friday we will have kids arrive in the late afternoon. Gary Hahn is the safety officer for this event. We will meet before the kids show up to have a safety meeting and talk about the event before we start.

On Saturday, the children will be split into two groups. Under the direction of Debby Alley and Michael Garza, director of Fort McKavett, 30 children will be taught about soldier life by allowing them to shoot guns (bb), shoot arrows, and track. The other 30 kids will ride in wagons on a private ranch and learn about the development of forts, horses’ impact on the frontier and more history of Fort McKavett. We have about a 14 mile trail ride set up it will start on a small county road then we will end up on the Powell Ranch. We will have a sack lunch at hill top with a windmill. Then we will ride into the ranch and circle back out and be back to camp at about 4. On Sunday, the groups will reverse and do the same thing. Richard Burney is the trail boss, Jeanne and Gary Hahn will be the drag scouts.
The guests will play period games in the evening. Saturday at supper there are 12 fire rings that we will fire up and let the kids cook there own steaks under close supervision. This will give them a taste of some outdoor cooking. We hope to have several dutch oven cooks there to demonstrate cooking with them. One group will sleep in tents while the other sleeps in the barracks; then they will switch so everyone has the experience of sleeping in the open air.

We encourage all TETRA Members and Non-TETRA Members to join us for the trail rides. Only primitive camping is available. Weekend fee is $45 for TETRA Members, $50 for Non-TETRA Members, which includes 6 meals. If you plan to attend as a rider, YOU MUST REGISTER/RSVP NO LATER THAN February 26, 2010 in order for us to plan enough food for the children, volunteers and riders.
